U17 Boys go to the National Championship!

WSA PLAYERS & COACHES REACH NATIONAL FINAL

An unlikely climb from relative obscurity to the pinnacle of competitive youth soccer ended one step short of the top for a local "Cinderella" Boys U-17 soccer team.

This past Everest SC U-17 boys soccer team, composed of six former WSA players advanced to the nationals championship series finals by finishing first in the annual 14-State Midwest Regional Tournament. They are the first Cleveland-area boys soccer team in over 20 years to advance to the national championship finals.

This year the US Youth Soccer Association National Championships were held July 23-27 in Little Rock, Arkansas. The tournament format features a round-robin between the top teams from each of the country's 4 soccer regions. The two top-placed teams then play-off for the national title.

The U-17 boys bracket at nationals included FC Delco from Pennsylvania; Andromeda 91 from Texas; and Diablo FC from California. Everest finished top of the group after pool play with a 2-0-1 record, beating national powers FC Delco (PA-E) and Diabalo Black (CA-N), and drawing 1-1 against Andromeda (TX). The Everest boys lost to Andromeda, 1-0 in a hard fought championship game.

The U17 Everest coaching staff is composed of two Westlake based coaches, John Fenix, Head Coach, and current Director of Coaching for the WSA travel program, and Dan O'Brien, Assistant Coach, and the current U13G Westlake Rockers coach. Six former Westlake Cobra players are rostered on the U17 team, including: Aidan Fenix (Westlake), Mark Ilhan (Lutheran West), Jimmy O'Brien, Matt Elliot and Karl Helfrich (St. Edward).

Great job for making it to the nations highest youth soccer venue!
